The survey, which was carried out by the Future Foundation on behalf of Dove, interviewed girls aged between 11 and 17 years of age, and reveals the alarming effect that low Self-esteem is having on their future prospects and outlook on life. Only a third of those interviewed felt confident that they would go on to have success in any chosen career.

This lack of self-esteem and self-confidence in their appearance has resulted in them spending as much time in attending to it as they would spend on their homework, nearly forty five minutes applying make-up in contrast to just fifty or so minutes on home work. Almost fifty per cent described themselves as ordinary and claimed they would be far happier if they felt more attractive.

This alarming image of thousands of young girls suffering from low self-esteem and self-confidence could have long term effects on the future of women's roles in society.

The results of this particular survey have indicated that by the middle of this century the United Kingdom could lose hundreds and thousands of professional women such as doctors, lawyers and business entrepreneurs, plus the possibility of lacking fifty future women members of parliament.

It is also claimed that this lack of self-esteem and self-confidence at present being displayed by these girls will make it highly unlikely they will aspire to careers in business, politics or sport.

It is a highly disturbing picture that is being painted by the results of this survey, a picture of thousands of young girls unknowingly condemning themselves to lower expectations of life and future happiness. It would be easy, and in some ways justified to blame the media, magazines, television and pop videos, for this undermining of young girls self-confidence. They are subjected to a constant barrage of images of near perfect models and highly glamorous life styles, to make them think that they are somehow inadequate if they do not conform to these images; but the future does not have to be that bleak.

Dove has launched a high self-esteem programme, aimed at 11 to 14 year old girls, to be introduced and rolled out in the form of workshops in schools across the country.

In addition to these workshops, parents and other adults can strive to boost young girl's self-esteem in as many ways as possible. Praise them for any small achievement they may make. Convince them that they are as attractive as any air brushed model, and that personality and a healthy outlook on life are just as important as physical beauty. Raising their self-esteem will raise their aspirations, and their future prospects.

Wash and Rinse
Wash your hair, and wash it good! You don’t have to spend a fortune on hair products, but you really should use both a shampoo and conditioner that work together for your particular hair type. But you should definitely spend extra time rinsing all the product gunk out of your hair. Otherwise, your hair could be difficult to style, and be weighted down…it could even look “dirty” when you’ve just washed it!

More Isn’t Always Better
Too much gel or mousse in your hair creates nothing but a sticky, unmanageable mess! And if you use expensive styling products, you are wasting money as well. Use water to rinse out what you can, dry off the excess water, and then style as normal. You should still have enough product left in there to get the job done.

Splurge On Your Tools
Yes, I can tell the difference when I get my hair done at the salon and they use pricey hairbrushes, a good tourmaline dryer, and an expensive flat iron. I have purchased all of these items, and have had them for years. Consider it an investment; your hair will thank you for it!

When You Blowdry Does Matter
If you hop right out of the shower and start blowdrying your hair, you’ll probably realize that it takes a lot longer than normal. If your bathroom is steamy, it actually will take more time (and more heat) to get it dry, and may do more damage to your hair as well.

If You Can Wait, Wait
If you can, just blow dry your hair until it’s about 80% dry and then let it air dry the rest of the way. The longer you blow dry, the more likely you are to cause damage to your hair with all the yanking and pulling you are doing. If you are not going to be curling or flat ironing after you blow dry, then when it’s 80% dry you can go ahead and pin it up, put it in a pony tail…whatever.

Better yet, shower in the evening and then let your hair air dry. This avoids having to blow dry your hair at all!
What is the best styling tip you have? Mine is that last one…I try to blowdry my hair as little as possible. And when I do blowdry it, I always use a heat protecting product. I really like Nexxus’ Protexx Heat Protection Styling Spray (and it smells good too!)

Chris Young was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on June 12, 1985. His grandfather, Richard Yates, was a performer on the Louisiana Hayride. He showed interest in music from a early age, performing in various children's theater productions; while attending Oakland High School (Tennessee), he began playing in local clubs. While attending college, he continued to tour, performing more than 150 shows a year.

Chris Young turns 27 today (June 12th) and ever since winning Nashville Star in 2006 when he was just barely in his 20s, he has been a staple on the Country Charts — and it doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere anytime soon.

The grandson of onetime Louisiana Hayride performer Richard Yates, country singer/songwriter Chris Young hails from Murfreesboro, TN, and first drew the public's attention when he appeared on the Nashville Star television show in 2006. Young's singing abilities first surfaced in children's theater productions in grade school, and with his family's full support, he threw himself into learning all he could about music, and country music in particular. By the time he was a senior in high school he was already playing clubs in the Nashville area, and his self-released debut album was out before he even graduated from high school. Young attended college at Belmont University in Nashville and then Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, all while still managing to do some 150 live shows a year. He was offered and accepted a gig fronting the house band at Cowboy's in Arlington, TX, and it was there that a fan kept insisting that he audition for the Nashville Star TV show. Young eventually made the trip to Houston and passed the audition, and the whole affair paid off handsomely with a contract from RCA Records. Young's debut single, "Drinkin' Me Lonely," a song he wrote with Larry Wayne Clark, was released in 2006, followed later in the year by a Buddy Cannon-produced album called simply Chris Young.

A second album, The Man I Want to Be, produced by James Stroud, appeared in 2009. That album netted the singer three No. 1 singles, "Gettin' You Home," "The Man I Want to Be" and "Voices." Neon, Young's third album for RCA, is scheduled to bow in summer 2011.

Parker Young (as Ryan Shay) was featured in an episode of Suburgatory a few weeks ago (as well as PTT a few months back). But because I'm a bit behind in TV viewing, I'm not just getting to the show. All of which means it's taken me longer to make note that one of my friends, TP, should be watching this show.

While a certain segment of "Suburgatory" star Parker Young's fans no doubt appreciate his comic timing, from my online researches it's apparent that many of the most vocal among them are more enamoured with the ex-model's ability to pop his ass.

"I didn't really know that I was going to be ass popping before I got on the set so I wasn't really able to rehearse the ass popping the way I would have liked," Young says, tongue planted firmly in cheek. "But it's really just a matter of having fun. They just call action and tell me to kind of dance and they bring out a boombox and I just start dancing."

Some explanation: Young, 23, plays dumb jock Ryan Shay on the hit ABC sitcom "Suburgatory." Jane Levy stars as Tessa Altman, a lifelong New Yorker transplanted by her overprotective father George (Jeremy Sisto, "Law & Order") to Chatswin, a fictional all-American suburb where the perfect spray tan is more important than grades or a healthy curiosity about the outside world. Over the course of the show's first season, smart and quirky Tessa has reluctantly found herself attracted to thick-as-a-brick Ryan, a charismatic sports star so free of self-consciousness that he'll playfully mime his parents' bedroom motions in front of his own sister at school. Hence the ass popping.

"I have so much fun with Ryan," Young says. "And it gives me such a freedom to just be childlike and insane and speak what's on my mind. And if I have to dance shirtless washing a car, I think the dumbness of the character, or the childlike sensibility, allows me to get away with it without being creepy. Humping a locker can certainly be creepy in the wrong context, but he's just too dumb to really comprehend that it's odd."

"Suburgatory's" next episode, "The Body," sees Chatswin High wrestling champ Ryan injured and subsequently wheelchair-bound. His parents Sheila and Fred (played by Ana Gasteyer and Chris Parnell), Young says, "treat it like the death of a child: 'if he can't wrestle, he's dead to us.'" As a result, Ryan is taken under George's wing.

"He teaches me how to be a man without having to rely on wrestling. He helps me dig a little deeper and find out who Ryan truly is. It's a great episode."

"The Body" also promises to reignite the unlikely flame which was kindled between Tessa and Ryan earlier in the season. An interesting bit of trivia: Young's first day on the "Suburgatory" set was the day he and his co-star Levy first had to kiss.

"She handled it like a champ," Young says of the extended mock make-out sessions. "I remember, yeah, my first day we had to be making out all day under bleachers, in laundry rooms and stuff. It was a lot. And it can definitely be uncomfortable when you just meet somebody, but it was totally fine. It wasn't a problem at all."

Prior to landing his role on "Suburgatory," the Tucson, AZ native made his living modelling for the likes of Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein and (2)xist. Early acting gigs included bit parts on "Days of Our Lives," "CSI: NY" and "Make It or Break It." "Suburgatory" is his first steady acting job, and Young is grateful for it.

"It's a scary industry because you never know," he says. "They could send Ryan Shay off to college and then there goes that security. But, yeah, it's been a huge relief having constant work and staying busy and of course being paid. It's been great. As you said, it's [usually] one-day stuff here and there. I'll book a commercial and get a chunk of change, but then you don't know what's going to happen after that."

I ask Young what it's been like working on a critically and commercially successful series like "Suburgatory."

"I've never been a part of something with such an amazing writing team," he says, "and the creator Emily Kapnek is brilliant. We get the scripts and go sit down at the table read with all the actors and producers in the room, and we just read through this script, and everyone's cracking up. And it's really fun to watch the process, watch the script evolve, and see the actors bring their own creative input to it, and see the thing a couple of weeks later on TV. It's really a great experience."

Given his own background as a model, I ask Young how important spray tanning and going to the gym are to his getting into character as Ryan.

"The spray-tanning, it helps you... You realize - superficial may not be the right word for it - really just how outward-focused these people might be. It's all about appearance and being tan.

"But going to the gym, it's just like when I played football: going to the gym and exercising and watching your gain in the gym gives you the confidence to perform on the field, and same with this. It's like when I'm in the gym getting ready and trying to look like Ryan Shay, it gives you the confidence on set to rip your shirt off and be that cocky, shirtless guy that has to dance around and hose himself off."
